Along The Road To Lucca
Most Italian cities date back to Roman times. In those days there were marshes along the coast, and malaria was rampant. It wasn't until the Hapsburgs controlled the region that they were successful in land reclaimation. They dug canals to drain the land, and planted eucalyptus trees and umbrella pines to use the surplus water.

Left: Some umbrella pines near the highway. Below: Umbrella pines were pointed out to us by our guide in Portugal, and this is the first time I've been able to get a picture of these unique pines.
