Yangtze River
Tour Day Nine: Sunday, April 29, 2001
East Of Chonqing
A Boatyard
We saw several boat yards along the river bank. People are building new barges, anticipating the new lake to be impounded by the Three Gorges Dam.
Intense Hillside Farming
Except for the steepest hills in the gorges, Yangtze River people farm every available space, and some places that seem to be impossible. The terraces cover these hills.
One-half of China's food is grown in the Yangtze watershed and more than one-third of the population live there. The river is China's lifeline.
