Juneau, Alaska

We feel the guides add
so much to our
enjoyment of any place
we visit for the first
time, so we opted for a
combination sea and land
tour here. We cruised
around Admiralty Island
across Gastineau Channel
from Juneau with a
naturalist tour guide.

We saw several bald eagles
as well as other sea birds
and animals.

Then a toured by bus and
visited the Mendenhall
Glacier near Auk Bay.

Mendenhall Glacier

The Mendenhall Glacier

It was raining by the time we arrived at the Mendenalll Glacier.
The Visitor Center was socked in. Just as we were about to board
the bus, the cloud lifted enough for Pat to snap this picture.
Like most of the Alaskan glaciers, Mendenhall is retreating,
and has a lake at its base. The Visitor Center stands on
ground once covered by the glacier.

This 3-dimensional model of the Juneau Icefield and the glacier
stands before the glass wall overlooking the glacier.

On our way back into town we pass the small boat marina.
We also passed a marina for seaplanes that looked very much
like this one.
