More challenging than the Thompson Pass road, ID-456 crosses the Coeur d'Alene Mountains north of Wallace.
You turn onto this road at Eagle, three miles west of Murray on Forest Highway 9, the site of the first gold rush camp in the area and Wyatt Earp's 1884 tent saloon.

This old mine is just outside of Wallace on Highway 456.

Historic Wallace
