Aitkin, Minnesota

Day 5, Friday, August 17, 2001

12:25 PM. We almost missed this delightful spot in Aitkin. Recalling a sign point to public access to the Mississippi river we turned back and found the road leading to this little park.

This is not far from the source of the great river. Aitkin is about 85 miles southeast of Itasca State Park, which is listed as the source of the Mississippi. The river travels in a great arc before it arrives at this park in Aitkin.

Texan Wannabe

We were surprised to see this guy in this little known park in Minnesota decked out in a tee shirt displaying the Texas flag. He had noticed our Texas license tag in the parking area and wanted to tell us how much he had enjoyed a visit to the state when he attended a meeting at a golf resort. We're always happy to talk with people about our adopted home state.

Owen squats in order for me to get a picture of him beside the river.
This tranquil river is very different from that which we see when the river has had the space to mature and develop a healthy and speedy current.
