The Flat Tire Saga

Day 43: Monday, September 24, 2001

Almost 2 Hours Later

We had tried to make it to Wal-Mart, and almost did. We were stranded on the side of the road almost two hours! We called AAA, which is supposed to have a time limit for a tow to show up. But for some reason they recorded the time of our call wrong, so were unconcerned about our being stranded.

Our predicament could have been so much, much worse. If we had not stopped in the casino parking lot for a view of the Mississippi River and discovered the problem, we would have had the blowout on the bridge crossing the river!

Although there was a lot of traffic by this location, if someone had stopped to rob us, nobody was close enough to have helped.

Eventually a city police officer found some free time and came over to check on us. He waited with us until the tow truck came. He was a very friendly and helpful man. But he helpfully told us how tourists have been robbed at gun point on the casino parking lot! Presumably not at 9:30 in the morning, however.

What a way to end a beautiful trip!

We did finally get on the road with a new tire and made it to Longview, Texas that night.
The following day we drove to Ft. Worth, and had a quick visit with our children and grandchildren. Then made it home to Odessa on day 45, Wednesday, September 26th, 2001. The odometer had rolled over 8795 miles since we left home at 7:30 AM on Monday, August 13th.
