Tow Boat Gets an Assist From Friendly Tender
A tender on the right, assists the tow boat, Ray Waxler (left) in navigating the turn in the river and aligning the barge load to get by the bridge supports.
Although the picture doesn't show it, there is a sharp curve just before the bridge. So the helmsman must not only navigate the bridge supports, but the sharp curve just before he gets there.
The Ray Waxler and its barge load made the turn and bridge passing just fine!
It's impossible to over-estimate the skill required to navigate these huge barge loads up and down the Mississippi with its swift current and treacherous curves and channels.
