The Natchez Trace
Baker Bluff Overlook
Day 41: Saturday, September 22, 2001
Pastoral Valley
We get a rare glimpse of the surrounding farmlands at the Baker Bluff Overlook. We left Columbia at 9 AM, a 50 minute drive from this point. A bull bellowed in the morning mist.
Trail Closed
A couple of miles down the road from Baker Bluff, we encounter storm damage on the trail. This is the overgrown condition that more likely met the early day travelers most of the time, if the trail wasn't buried in mud. Because of the mud holes along the way, there were many alternate trails that had been hacked out of the underbrush. Navigating would become a challenge. There were times that they wouldn't know which to follow, and they would sometimes follow a trail that went nowhere.
