The Zion-Mt. Carmel Highway

Completed in 1930, the road was considered an "almost impossible project," an engineering marvel of its time. Build across rough up-and-down terrain, it connects lower Zion Canyon with the high plateaus to the east.

Pictured above is the second of two tunnels drilled and blasted through the cliffs to finish the construction job.
