Moses Kinolau, is our native Hawaiian guide for a tour of historic Lahaina.
The Chantress
We were on the shore at the place where royal births took place in the water.
The chants of this lovely young woman brought the stories to life for us.
In the past, Lahaina has been the residence of Maui's highest chiefs, the first capital of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i, the site of the breaking of the kapu of ancient Hawai‘i and a few years later, the first secondary school established west of the Rockies. Lahaina has also seen sea captains and whalers, immigrant laborers and the jet-set vie for a place in its history.
This is the locale of much of James Mitchner's Hawaii.
