Visitor Center Patio
We had a shady spot to wait for the 10 AM tour to begin.
Fortunately our early arrival gave us a nearby parking space so we could retrieve any needed items from the car.
This is the gate we used to enter the mission fortification.

Ranger Ed Petru acted as our guide through the mission. Here we stopped beside a prickly pear cactus. This gave us the opportunity to discuss some of the things that people found to eat on the Texas frontier. When the thorns have been removed from the cactus patties by the flame, they provide nourishment to man and beast. The little pears or cactus apples are quite good. We also learned that mesquite beans were ground into flour and used as a staple in the Indian diet. Use this link to learn more about the prickly pear and how it is used today.
